CHAPTER 25
THE SPACE BETWEEN
Pieter was awakened at 4:15 a.m. by his dance music-themed alarm, he passionately hated that tune now. He moaned as he rolled over and groped wildly in the dark to locate the screen, and pressed the snooze mode button to turn the hellish noise off. Pieter had been unable to sleep for hours after his evening call to Emily and had been lost in thoughts of the dirty things they did and how she made him feel. Pieter threw his arms above his head, stretched out, groaned loudly and rolled over. After lying on his belly in a daze for another five minutes the alarm went off again. He grabbed the phone and turned the alarm completely off, tossed the phone back on the bed and staggered into the shower. Pieter reappeared fifteen minutes later looking a little peakier, his wet blond hair combed back from his shaved and moisturized face.
Pieter was flying to Düsseldorf for an editorial spread for GQ magazin.de. The spread had come off the back of the success of Berlin Fashion Week. To GQ Pieter Bayer was considered one of the âWunderkind von Deutsch Modeâ (Wonder Boys of German Fashion) but looking in the mirror as he donned underwear, black jeans, T-shirt and a thick woolen sweater, Pieter really didnât feel like much of a wunderkind today.
The flight to Düsseldorf took just over an hour. It was a route Pieter had flown a thousand times and apart from the monotony of having to arrive two hours before departure, the flight was trouble free. A taxi brought Pieter through the rush hour traffic to Düsseldorfâs Media Harbour. The upscale, newly redeveloped Media Harbour district housed some spectacular post-modern architecture. Pieter thought of Emily as he stared absently out of the car window onto a crisp winter blue sky, the bank of the River Rhine looming into view.
Pieter was greeted outside the Radisson Blu Media Harbour Hotel by photographer Max Reiss, a bearded portly man in his late forties. Max was dressed for a day in the cold conditions, complete with real fur Deerstalker hat. He leaned nonchalantly against a pillar, taking a cigarette break and glancing at his phone screen. Pieter had worked with Max before and was on friendly terms.
âPlease say we are shooting indoors today?â He pleaded. Max grimaced and shook his head.
âWeâre going down to the harbor, the lightâs so good today and the shapes of the architecture here are fantastic,â He said,âWonderboy and wonderful architecture,â He explained jovially with a sly grin. Pieter nodded placidly, gritted his teeth and went to the hotel to meet Hanna Meinz, the stylist for the shoot.
The hair and makeup artist were already set up a hotel room. The day was spent unglamorously traipsing back and forth from the hotel room to locations for each change of outfit. But Max was right, the architecture was amazing and the futuristic look of some of the buildings fitted perfectly with the context of the editorial.
Pieter had fashion industry friends in most European cities and when he could, he stayed over with them.
